Event Expectations:
UVFC invites you to an evening of fencing action. Participate in the excitement, fun and comradery of this classic and Olympic sport. We will provide all instruction and equipment necessary for you to experience the thrill of fencing for yourself. After a brief overview of the sport and its history, we will guide you through practical fencing basics over the course of this two-hour session and see you convert that into immediate action.
Background:
The Upper Valley Fencing Club (UVFC) focuses on modern sport fencing in all three weapons — foil, épée and saber — and our practice is rooted in respect for sportsmanship, classical form, contemporary technique and competitive play.
UVFC provides ability-and aptitude-appropriate challenges for fencers from a broad range of experience and ages. Communal improvement of form, technique and skills is the primary focus during the initial formal foil program of each Monday and Wednesday evening session, followed by advanced practice, as well as “open fencing” in all three weapons in the latter part.
UVFC was founded in 2008 at the initiative of four fencers, who had previously been active in Tracy Hall fencing with the Ryvnine School of Fence (RSF). UVFC works as a cooperative club based on an all-volunteer effort. We are dedicated to sharing the sport of fencing through teaching and mutual mentoring, seeking to enable our fencers to develop their own skills and then to disseminate their knowledge and experience in support of others.
We encourage family participation and routinely have a parent and one or two offspring participating together. Through this pairing, parents and kids can share in a physical activity. While our activities do not require a high base level of fitness, they usually result in better overall fitness and stress reduction, improve mindful practice and increase physical as well as mental agility.
UVFC comprises a wide range of instructor experience and interests, enabling teenage students to prepare for collegiate fencing, and fencers of any age for competitive fencing, if they so desire.
Whether you are an active fencer, a rusty blade, or interested in learning about the fencing, please join us!
