This special lecture will provide an update on efforts to regulate tobacco in America by one of the nation's senior government officials, Mitchell Zeller, a Dartmouth graduate. He will share his experiences as director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products. He will discuss the need for, and role of, regulation as well as FDA's educational ad campaigns and other efforts to address recent public health challenges, including the high rates of e-cigarette use including so-called vaping, among young people.
Mitchell Zeller has had 36 years of experience with FDA tobacco issues. issues. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1979 with a double major in Government and Policy Studies. He subsequently earned a law degree from American University. Prior to serving as Director of the FDA"s Tobacco Center, he was senior vice-president at Pinney Associates, where he provided strategic planning and communications advice on domestic and global public health policy issues involving the treatment of tobacco dependence and the regulation of tobacco products and pharmaceuticals. From 1988 to 1993 he served as counsel to a subcommittee in the House of Representatives that did oversight of the FDA
